Proceedings of the First meeting of the East African Regional External Quality Assessment Scheme
(EA-REQAS): 3 - 4 April 2003

The first Regional Technical Meeting of the East African Regional External Quality Assessment Scheme (EA-REQAS) was held in Arusha, Tanzania, on 3 - 4 April, 2003. Participants included representatives from national health laboratory authorities, professional clinical and laboratory bodies, health laboratory boards and councils, research institutes and private health institutions.
Country experiences of National External Quality Assessment Schemes (NEQAS) were shared, and the operations of a regional scheme and how participation in an EA-REQAS could contribute to strengthening national schemes, as well as setting regional standards and enhancing regional cooperation, were discussed. An East African Regional Quality Assurance Committee (EA-REQAC) comprising two representatives from each Ministry and Amref Health Africa staff was formed and tasked to develop and monitor the operations of the scheme and all related activities. Amref Health Africa was appointed interim coordinator of the scheme.

Proceedings of the First Meeting of the East African Regional Quality Assurance Committee (EA-REQAC): 26 - 27 April 2006

The first meeting of the East African Regional Quality Assurance Committee (EA-REQAC) was held in Stone Town, Zanzibar, on 26 - 27 April, 2006. This meeting established the scheme logistics and operations including the Terms of References for the EA-REQAC, criteria for selecting types of proficiency testing materials to be included, selection of reference laboratories for material production, frequency of surveys, and selection of participating laboratories for the two-year pilot phase.

Proceedings of the Second Meeting of the East African Regional Quality Assurance Committee
(EA-REQAC): 18 - 19 April 2009

The second meeting of the East African Regional Quality Assurance Committee (EA-REQAC) was held in Kampala, Uganda, on 18 - 19 April, 2009. Individual country performances, successes and constraints, and cross cutting issues were discussed. The Amref Health Africa Coordinating Centres gave updates on the progress of the overall scheme's operation. Plans for scaling up to more facilities in participating countries, and expansion of the scheme to Rwanda and Burundi were explored.

Proceedings of the East African Inter-Country Meeting on Strengthening Capacity for Post-Market Surveillance of Diagnostics and Third Meeting of the East African Regional Quality Assurance Committee
(EA-REQAC): 15 - 17 March 2010

The third meeting of the East African Regional Quality Assurance Committee (EA-REQAC) was held in conjunction with the East African Inter-Country meeting on Strengthening Capacity for Post-Market Surveillance of Diagnostics in Nairobi, Kenya, on 15 - 17 March, 2010. An overview of WHO activities for strengthening laboratory quality in the region and WHO post market surveillance for priority diagnostics were outlined. Key challenges and issues related to quality of diagnostics and suggested
solutions were discussed. The progress of the EA-REQAS project and future plans were developed. The meeting marked the end of Phase One of EA-REQAS with the resolution to rapidly scale up the scheme to all laboratories in the region.
